Strategic Planning
Navigating the road to business success requires strategic planning
Success comes in many different forms. Just as businesses have different functions, they also have different goals. A successful business is one that is actively on track to meet these objectives. This is an important aspect of success – you need to have a clearly defined goal. If you don’t know what you want to achieve, you won’t achieve anything. Having a goal, however, on its own, is not enough. You need to be focussed on your objective and have a realistic plan of action on how to achieve it. This plan of action is the result of strategic planning.
So you have a goal, a vision for your business. Before you rush off to start with your strategic planning you first need to analyse the current state of your business in order to determine where you are. Also conduct thorough research on the resources you have available. Once this is done, you can compare your current position with the one you have set as your goal. Note the differences that need to be worked on and areas or processes that seem in need of improvement. Now look at your available resources. You need to apply these resources in the most efficient manner possible in such a way that it will move the company from where it is towards its target.
Now that you have done your strategic planning, the most important part awaits – this plan need to be successfully implemented otherwise it is worth nothing. After implementation you also need to evaluate the progress. It would be wise to revisit the strategy at least annually to ensure it is still relevant and make any alterations deemed necessary.
Strategic planning can thus be summarised in broad strokes by the following actions. First there need to be a set mission statement and a defined vision. The current position of the business needs to be determined before any planning can start. An action plan must be formulated on how to steer the business from where it currently is towards the vision, and then, very importantly, it needs to be implemented and monitored.
