Congratulations to Campell Plant, a trainee Data Analytical Modeller at Business Modelling Associates, who was announced as the joint winner of the CIWEM New Generations Competition (Tyne & Humber Branch) with her fantastic presentation on The Power BI-nd Sludge Visualisation.
Cambell now goes forward to a national competition where she will compete for the coveted CIWEM Young Environmentalist of the Year Award which will be announced at the end of 2017. Please see below for Cambell’s abstract for her winning presentation.
Thames Water is the largest wastewater services company in the UK producing over 1.5 million cubic metres of sludge annually which is produced at 250 Sewage Treatment Works and then treated at 32 sludge treatment centres. Ensuring that this process runs smoothly and efficiently is a significant challenge for Thames Water. Business Modelling Associates (BMA) was contracted by Thames Water to develop a Sludge Production Planning model to help optimise procedures and view them holistically. This model contains vast amounts of raw data in tables for a wide range of variables and scenarios.
To enable Thames Water to interact with this information, Campbell and the BMA team developed dashboards using Microsoft Power BI which include an array of visual aids. Finding the best way to integrate the different sets of data and the most insightful ways to present it was also a challenge. By using a query formula language, Campbell was able to successfully manipulate the data and come up with creative ways to maximise the users’ ability to process large amounts of information in order to derive meaningful conclusions for the business.
